Daruma Doll

President and Sister Halvorson gave the missionaries a Daruma doll for New Years.  The Daruma doll is rich in symbolism and is a sign of good luck for the new year. The eyes are blank. Once you determine your goal,  you color in the first eye. At the end of the year, you complete your goal and finish the other eye. The Daruma doll wobbles but won't stay down. If you tip it on it's side, it uprights itself. This is symbolic of perseverance in striving toward your goal. You may falter but just pick yourself up and keep trying. President Russell M. Nelson, the prophet gave us a New Year's Message for 2023... Be Patient... Be Persistent.. Be Prayerful...

Nagano lives up to the title 'Beautiful Japan'

Last weekend, we were invited to Nagano to meet with Elder and Sister Wada. Fred was the first missionary to introduce the gospel to Elder Wada 42 years ago. Elder Wada now serves as Area President for the North Asia and a General Authority for the church.  Elder and Sister Gunson, another missionary instrumental in Elder Wada's conversion, also met with us. We went to the area they first met, the old location of the church building, and the new church in Nagano. They even found the apartment that they lived in so long ago. Members are instrumental in helping friends join the gospel of Jesus Christ. We met three couples that were originally in the ward 42 years ago. I was impressed with their faith and dedication to the gospel after all of these years.  One of the sisters came up to me, grabbed my hand and began talking to me in Japanese. Build Bridges...

  This week was the anniversary of Pearl Harbor, December 7, 1941. I have been reading documents for the past month concerning a war hero, Mervyn S. Bennion, in the Church History Library.  He was a Utah resident in command of a battleship during the bombing of Pearl Harbor.   He was like many others whose "courage, skill, alertness, and a complete disregard for his own personal personal safety" was able to serve and save others.  During the initial bombing, Captain Bennion, was mortally wounded by bomb shrapnel but he refused to be taken from the deck.  His only concern was his men and saving the ship.  He died while on that battleship.  There are many who have done the same throughout the history of war and across nations.  We owe our peace and freedom to these soldiers who with "compete disregard for their own personal safety" gave us this gift.
