Merry Christmas to All

Snow has fallen in Utah just in time for Christmas. It is a winter wonderland with all the lights and decorations on temple square.

We attended a wonderful Christmas Devotional with our Salt Lake City Headquarters Mission this week.  Fred and I also joined the Elijah Choir with lots of choir practice in preparation for the our Christmas program.

One of the sister missionaries pointed out a scripture that touched my heart.

"But they that wait upon the Lord shall renew their strength; they shall mount up with wings as eagles; they say run, and not be weary; and they shall walk, and not faint." Isaiah 40:31


I continue to study Japanese everyday.  I found a Japanese saying that I really like.

Nana korobi ya oki. 

"I fall 7 times, and get up 8."

 Wishing you a Merry Christmas to all with happiness as you celebrate the birth of our Savior.

The blacksmith...

For our P-day (preparation day), we went to the knife stores in Sakai. We found a 5th generation blacksmith, Mizuno Tanrenjo. He creates knives the old fashioned way by forging carbon steel, heating it until it is red hot, and then hammering the metal out thinly. We got to see the workshop. The blacksmith was working with a blade and hammer when we arrived. We did not get to see the whole process but there were pictures taped to the wall so I took a few pictures of the pictures. I feel it is only fitting to make a moral to this experience. We are in the hands of the master blacksmith. God allows the fires of life to burn out our impurities, soften our hardness, and then he can mold us into the person we are meant to become. Mizuno-san also makes ceremonial swords for the sumo tournaments. This is Fred by some of the swords. We bought a vegetable knife which I am so excited about. Nagano lives up to the title 'Beautiful Japan'

Last weekend, we were invited to Nagano to meet with Elder and Sister Wada. Fred was the first missionary to introduce the gospel to Elder Wada 42 years ago. Elder Wada now serves as Area President for the North Asia and a General Authority for the church.  Elder and Sister Gunson, another missionary instrumental in Elder Wada's conversion, also met with us. We went to the area they first met, the old location of the church building, and the new church in Nagano. They even found the apartment that they lived in so long ago. Members are instrumental in helping friends join the gospel of Jesus Christ. We met three couples that were originally in the ward 42 years ago. I was impressed with their faith and dedication to the gospel after all of these years.  One of the sisters came up to me, grabbed my hand and began talking to me in Japanese. Language Study

We interviewed 17 missionaries this week in an effort to organize English Connect for Missionaries.  We were so impressed with caliber of these young men and women.  Missionaries are encouraged to study language at least 1 hour a day.  The Japanese are encouraged to learn English and the English speaking missionaries are encouraged to learn Japanese.  We will be holding classes in the evening to help those studying English improve their English skills. I am still studying Japanese at least an hour a day.  I continue to have a teacher 1-2 times a week. I try to practice 100 vocabulary words a day. I also play Duolingo and Rosetta Stone. Fred found me some good children's stories to practice reading. This one is "The Three Bears".  The book reads from back to front and right to left, as it should be. My progress is slow but I do see gradual improvement.  Hopefully, learning a language will keep my mind young and active.
